Welcome to the lesson about engaged journalism. The relationship between journalists and their audiences has changed since the digital revolution of media. The online environment empowers audiences to be more closely engaged in the journalistic process. This course discusses the evolution of the audience’s role from a one-way broadcast model to the nowadays online environment and introduces methods of audience engagement online and offline – engaged journalism. Engaged journalism is generally defined as a practice when the audience is invited actively contribute to reporting by suggesting ideas, finding sources for the stories, conducting interviews together with journalists, and shadowing journalists during reporting. In this class, we will discuss how collaborative culture is changing journalism, how audiences can take part in the journalistic processes, and how engagement is transforming newsrooms and journalists’ work routines.
